Danny Woodards expecting the toughest of tests for Bristol Rovers against Swindon

DANNY Woodards knows Bristol Rovers face a stern test of their improved form when they take on League Two leaders Swindon Town tomorrow.
Paolo Di Canio's side are four points clear at the top of the table and will be looking to quickly put the disappointment of last weekend's Johnstone's Paint Trophy defeat behind them.
And Woodards, who scored his first league goal the last time the sides met, at the Memorial Stadium in December, believes an improving Rovers will have to be on top of their game to return from the County Ground with anything to show for their efforts.
He said: It was great to score my first league goal against them last time, but I'll just be happy if we can win the game and pick up three points when we go there.
"I watched bits of their game at Wembley against Chesterfield last weekend and we are aware of their strengths and weaknesses.
"They are top of the league, so obviously they are a good side, but so are we when we go out and perform.
"It's a decent pitch over there and both clubs have got a good following, so it should be a great atmosphere. We've been working hard to prepare after losing at Aldershot on Tuesday night and we're all looking forward to it."
Rovers will be looking to bounce back from their own reverse this week after suffering a 1-0 defeat at Aldershot in a game manager Mark McGhee insisted his side were unlucky to lose.
Woodards said: "We were all pretty down after the Aldershot game.
"We didn't play that great, but neither did they, so a draw would have been a fair result. It's a minor setback in a good run we've been on and I have to say I'm really enjoying my football at the moment.
"We're a lot more solid than we were the last time we played Swindon and we look dangerous up front.
"There was massive pressure on every game around that time at Christmas. We were losing all the time and it was really taking it out of the players. When a new manager comes in everybody picks up their game a bit, but we had kind of felt that our performances were coming around that time, anyway.
"The manager hasn't really changed much. It's just basically about trying to get the ball down a bit more and not always looking to hit it long, but, yes, things are a lot happier around the camp.
"Personally, I just concentrate on the next game, but it's all starting to come together and, hopefully, it will work for us next year. A few of the lads may have mentioned a bit further ahead, which is understandable because next season is massive for the club.
"We need to get promoted next year, that's the main aim, but we need to concentrate on what is a big game at Swindon first."
Woodards skippered the side at Aldershot in the absence of Matt Gill on Tuesday night, and he said: "I only found out when the manager called me in just before the game.
"It was a great honour, but you seem to feel the defeat a little bit more when you are the skipper because you have to pick everybody else up. That was the first time I've ever done it, so it was all new to me, but I enjoyed it.
"I've got a year left on my contract and I hope to be here next season. Bristol Rovers is a good club with a great support and good bunch of lads, so that'll do for me."

Mali's neighbors threaten border closure in aftermath of coup

By Eric Agnero, For CNN
March 30, 2012 -- Updated 0430 GMT (1230 HKT)
STORY HIGHLIGHTS
  • A military junta ousted Mali's president last week
  • The Economic Community of West African States has given the junta a deadline
  • Give back power within 72 hours or face sanctions, ECOWAS says
  • Among the sanctions is closing access to ports for landlocked Mali

ABIDJAN, Ivory Coast (CNN) -- The military junta that ousted Malian President Amadou Toumani Toure has three days to hand back power to civilians or face "diplomatic and financial embargo," a group of African leaders warned Thursday after they met in emergency session.

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) "invite(s) its states to impose a travel ban for members of the junta and a diplomatic and financial embargo on the country if there is no return to constitutional order within a maximum period of 72 hours," said Kadre Desire Ouedraogo, ECOWAS president.

In addition to closing borders shared with member states and banning travel outside Mali by junta members, ECOWAS said its potential sanctions include a "freezing of assets of the junta members and their partners, as well as no access to the ports of the coastal countries of ECOWAS." Mali could also face the freezing of its accounts at the West African Central Bank.

The group of heads of states led by Ivorian President and ECOWAS Chairman Allasane Ouattara met Thursday in Abidjan, after a pro-junta demonstration at the airport in the Malian capital of Bamako prevented them from landing in Mali for a pre-arranged meeting. They were heading to to meet with key members of the junta, which wrested control of the West African nation last week.

Megan Larson-Kone of the U.S. mission in Mali told CNN that "a small group of demonstrators ... threatened to put themselves on the runway, making it difficult for the aircraft to land. The diplomatic missions of the countries involved made a decision that it would be safer ... to turn back."

The ECOWAS leaders had arranged a meeting with Capt. Amadou Sanogo, leader the junta that deposed Toure, a two-term president.

Coup leaders deposed the president, occupied his residence and took over the national television station after accusing the country's defense minister of failing to provide them with enough resources to fight an insurgency in the north.

Meanwhile, the nomadic Taureg who are fighting for autonomy in the north have taken advantage of chaos in the capital to occupy more territory.

Now in Mali -- once hailed as a shining example of African democracy, having experienced more than 20 years of democratic government -- the threat of sanctions prompted some to take precautions.

Mamadou Konate, a Bamako resident, told CNN that people were lining up to empty their bank accounts. "We are stocking up," Konate said. "These sanction are severe and will harm the small people, 80% of the population."

Mali, a poor country with no access to the sea and heavily dependent on foreign aid, is divided in the aftermath of the coup. Many Malians have taken to the streets to show their support the junta. Likewise, opponents of the junta have demonstrated in hopes of seeing the soldiers go.

On Monday, the United State suspended a portion of its aid to Mali in response to the coup. "We want to see the elected government restored as quickly as possible," State Depatment spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said.

On Tuesday, ECOWAS suspended Mali's membership, with Ouattara saying, "Dialogue and consultation will be the first instruments in finding a solution, but (ECOWAS members) will not hesitate to use any other option."

CNN's Nkepile Mabuse contributed to this report.

FLA Report Reveals Issues At Foxconn Plants, Details Solutions

apple_logoThe Fair Labor Association has concluded its month-long investigation of Chinese manufacturer Foxconn's factory conditions, and as they indicated early on, they have encountered "significant issues," though it's far from the sub-Dickensian hellhole many perhaps expected. They have focused on a few of the most significant problems and made some suggestions as to how to remedy them. Ultimately these solutions will need to be monitored by Chinese authorities — the same authorities under which the previous, nominally illegal excesses of Foxconn's were swept under the rug. But with the eye of the world upon them, it may be that even the most lax of regulators will have to make an effort to keep their industry in line with the laws that ostensibly bind them.
