Providence mayor to hike city's "last wild place"

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) ? The mayor of Providence is kicking off a celebration of Rhode Island's open spaces. Mayor Angel Taveras (tuh-VEHR'-us) plans to participate in a hike Friday at Neutaconkanut (nu-tah-CONN'-can-ut) Hill, an 88-acre area in the city's west side that a local environmental stewardship group calls the "last wild place in Providence." The event marks the start of Rhode Island Land Trust Days, a six-week series of events around Rhode Island intended to highlight the state's natural areas. Local children, environmental advocates and others are also expected to attend Friday's event.
